How is military time calculated

Military time is calculated a bit differently than the traditional 12-hour clock that we all know. It is based on a 24-hour clock, with the day starting at 0000 hours (midnight) and ending at 2400 hours (midnight of the following day). The hour numbers in military time are the same as they are in regular time until 12:00 noon, when they begin again at 1300 hours. Each hour is represented by two digits, so this would be 1:00 p.m. in civilian time or 1300 in military time. Continuing in this way, 2:00 p.m. would be 1400 and 11:00 PM would be 2300 in military time.

When it comes to minutes, you can simply add them to the two hour numbers without any conversion needed. For example, 4:03 PM would be 1603 hours in military time and 11:25 PM would be 2325 hours. The only difference between civilian and military times occurs after 1600 hours, where there are no corresponding numbers on a civilian clock clock - 1700 becomes 1700 instead of 5:00 PM.

As for abbreviations used for particular periods of day for conveniences sake, these all start at 0400 (4 AM). Commonly used abbreviations include SOH or start of operation hours (0400 - 1200), SOF or start of flight (1200 - 2000), EOH or end of operation hours (2000 - 0400), and EOF or end of flight (0000 - 0400).
